The world of fiction has changed greatly in recent years. From the rabid policing of so-called cultural appropriation to the rise of cancel culture, to the growth in independent publishers, who can say what and where is on everybody’s mind. Even famous authors are now under considerable pressure, both for their work and for their personal politics. For example, J.K. Rowling has taken a lot of heat for her positions on transgender issues, while Lionel Shriver has faced protests around the world, including in Australia.

We are joined by renowned journalist Claire Lehmann and author Helen Dale, controversial winner of the 1995 Miles Franklin Award, to discuss their experiences in the rapidly changing world of fiction.
