The increasing subjugation of women and the official enforcement of traditional gender roles have made China one of the most patriarchal countries on Earth — and alienated much of China’s contemporary urban youth. How far will China go in its censorship of what the Communist Party likes to call “sissy men” and what will Australia’s feminist foreign minister Penny Wong have to say about it? One thing is certain: the space for human rights advocacy in China has shrunk, and it’s hard to imagine anything that could bring a turn for the better.
