From Trump and Brexit to right- and left-wing movements across Europe, populism increasingly defines mainstream western politics by reflecting a grievance against the established order of elites. Is it driven primarily by economic failures and the illusions and excesses of globalisation? Or by illegal immigration and the cultural and economic resentment it stirs? What’s the difference between left-wing populism and right-wing populism? Is populism devoid of genuine policy solutions? And is Australia immune to the kind of populist — and nationalist — upheavals that are evident in the US and Europe? If yes, why? If no, in what form will populism take in its economic and social dimensions?
