Are we as a society ready for the known and unknown consequences?
Nanotechnology is providing the tools to communicate, in real time and at unprecedented resolution, with those brain circuits that encode our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Neural engineering is transforming this capability into functioning brain–computer interfaces (BCIs). Artificial intelligence is accelerating this process, decoding complex living neural signals and creating the potential for real-time human–AI integration.
But beyond the technical challenges lies a critical question: are we psychologically, ethically, and culturally prepared for what it means to directly connect the most intimate aspects of human cognition and emotions to machines?
