Hon. Dominic Perrottet

Dominic Perrottet is the former Premier of New South Wales, and few Australians know regulation as intimately as Dom.

Before entering politics, he trained as a solicitor at Henry Davis York Lawyers, working in banking restructuring and insolvency law, after an education at Redfield College and Oakhill College and a Commerce/Law degree from the University of Sydney. As NSW Treasurer and then Premier, he sat at the centre of economic policy in Australia’s largest state, writing the rules, weighing their costs, and seeing first-hand how regulation shapes investment, enterprise, and growth.

Now, as Vice President, International Affairs and United States Engagement at BHP, based in Washington D.C., he lives under the rules he once wrote. He leads the company’s engagement with the US Government and key international stakeholders, navigating regulatory regimes in competitive jurisdictions such as the United States, Chile and Argentina, and seeing exactly where Australia stands in the race for capital. He knows what regulation looks like, having been both the regulator and the regulated. Almost no one else in the country can say the same.

That’s why Perrottet is the ideal voice for Deregulation and Compliance: The Cost of Big Government at Consilium 2026. He joins a panel moderated by Stephen Walters, alongside Bunnings CEO Mike Schneider, confronting the question at the heart of Australia’s productivity malaise: if we supposedly deregulated the economy in the 1980s and 90s, why is everyone now drowning in red tape?
