Gary Banks is a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies and Professorial Fellow at the Melbourne Institute. He was Chairman of the Productivity Commission from its inception in 1998 to 2012, guiding its development and leading key inquiries and reviews. Gary subsequently spent four years as Dean/CEO of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government. Until recently he chaired the OECD’s Regulatory Policy Committee and the Australian Statistics Advisory Council. He also spent seven years as an Independent director with the Macquarie Group. Gary studied economics at Monash University and the Australian National University. HIs early career was spent at the GATT/WTO in Geneva and the Trade Policy Research Centre, London and he continues to consult internationally on structural reform. Gary is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and has received a number of awards for his contributions to public policy, including the Economic Society’s inaugural Distinguished Public Policy Fellow award.
