Associate Professor Ben Phillips is a Principal Research Fellow at the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods, with around two decades of experience as an economic and social researcher in Australia. He leads ANU’s microsimulation modelling team, focusing on the tax and transfer system, and is the principal architect of the PolicyMod model used to analyse the distributional effects of tax, welfare and superannuation policy. His research centres on personal income tax, welfare, superannuation and housing, and he currently sits on the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee, which advises the government on economic inclusion matters. Before joining ANU, Phillips spent a decade at the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling, where he built the STINMOD model of Australia’s tax and transfer system, and held earlier roles as a methodologist and economist at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, a senior economist at the Housing Industry Association, and an economic forecaster at the Bureau of Tourism Research.
